I shot this test footage on my Sony A7 IV in 4K at 10-bit 4:2:2 color depth, and I wanted to show you how Sony's free stabilization software—Catalyst Browse—handles the raw footage. This video is a direct comparison between the original ungraded, unstabilized material and what comes out the other side of their post-processing tool.
Catalyst Browse is Sony's proprietary software that works with footage from their cameras, and it's completely free to use. The stabilization it applies is nothing fancy—it's optical flow-based, which means it analyzes the motion between frames and applies correction. What I'm curious about here is whether the stabilization holds up without introducing artifacts or that plasticky, over-corrected feeling you sometimes get from aggressive electronic stabilization.
The A7 IV itself can shoot internal 10-bit 4:2:2, which gives you significantly more color information and dynamic range to work with compared to 8-bit recordings. That means the source material has plenty of latitude for color grading, and I wanted to see how a basic stabilization pass affects that quality. No color grading applied here—just the raw stabilization to keep things pure and show exactly what the software is doing.
