I used to think every photo had to be technically perfect before it was worth anything. But over time, I've discovered that some of my most valuable learning moments came from the shots that didn't work out—the ones that were blurry, badly composed, weirdly exposed, or just plain weird.
In this video, I'm laying out exactly why I take bad photos and how it's made me a better photographer. I share five specific reasons that have shaped my approach to shooting, and I walk through real examples using my Google Pixel 6 Pro and my Sony A7 IV to show you what I mean.
The thing is, there's a permission that comes with knowing bad photos aren't failures—they're information. When you stop obsessing over getting it right on every frame, you free yourself up to experiment, to break your own rules, and to push into territory you wouldn't normally explore. You start asking different questions: What happens if I shoot into the sun? What if I deliberately move the camera? What if I just point and shoot without thinking?
Those "bad" shots often teach you more about light, timing, composition, and your own creative voice than a dozen technically flawless images. They show you what's possible when you stop being so careful. And sometimes they're actually the most interesting ones—not despite their imperfections, but because of them.
