This is the third part of my West Coast travel vlog, and I wanted to dive into something I think about constantly while traveling: how to actually take good photos when you're moving around with people you care about.
Throughout this episode, I'm exploring the Oregon coast—from the rugged shorelines around Day 5, through Smith Rock on Day 6, and the stunning Painted Hills on Day 7. But the real focus here is on the process of photography while traveling. It's a balance I'm always working to strike: being present with my family and friends, while also trying to capture moments that feel genuine and well-composed.
I talk about gear choices—I've been testing both my phone and a mirrorless camera—but it's really about mindset more than equipment. When you're traveling, you don't have unlimited time at each location. You can't move mountains or wait for perfect light. So I explain the approaches that help me work with those constraints: anticipating moments, understanding the light you have, and knowing when to step back and just live the experience.
There's also a section on POV (point-of-view) photography—one of my favorite techniques for travel content. It's a way to bring people into the moment without constantly holding a camera in front of your face.
This video is as much about philosophy as it is about technique. If you're interested in photography, travel, or just trying to document your own adventures with family, I hope something here resonates with you. Part 1 and Part 2 are linked if you want to see what led up to this.
