I just got my hands on the Tamron 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6, and I have to say, I haven't been this excited about testing a new piece of gear in a long time. This is the kind of lens that appeals to me because it does so much in one package—you're looking at a 7x zoom range that starts at a genuinely useful 28mm wide angle and stretches all the way to 200mm telephoto. For less than $750, that's a lot of versatility.
I grabbed my Sony A7 IV and headed outside to put it through its paces. The A7 IV is a fantastic camera for this kind of real-world testing because it gives me the resolution and autofocus performance to really see what the lens can do across its range. What struck me immediately was how manageable the lens feels in hand, even though it's a 28-200mm. The f/2.8 aperture at 28mm is genuinely bright for a wide angle, which is useful in lower light. As you zoom in, the aperture does step down to f/5.6 at 200mm, which is typical for this class of lens.
I wanted to share that experience with you—the kind of first impressions you get when you're just discovering what a lens is really capable of.
