okay so i'm not too sure how to start this video but what i'm going to say is that probably when i was in high school people would describe me as being somebody that really liked technology and also somebody that really didn't like apple this makes it a little bit awkward because i just bought a new macbook pro but this video is not about why i like apple or not this video is going to be talking about why being a fanboy or a fan girl usually leads to poor purchase decisions in the end it's also a reflection i have been having in my head right now for switching to non-cameras i'm probably switching from canon to sony even though i wasn't the biggest fan of sony so the whole point of this video is to help you make better purchase decisions and not slowly base your decision on being a fanboy or fangirl for a certain tech company for those of you who are new to the channel i'm luke ben mahalford a young photographer and filmmaker on a journey to become better at design the main takeaway of this video is going to be that buying a protect project is actually buying a tool to solve a certain task this is very important to remember throughout this video i've done so many decisions in the past where i was solely basing my instincts on what i like from a company and being a fan boy for certain company and not really looking at all the different options from other companies and really choosing the best tool for the task i had to solve this video is going to be full of examples i'm going to share a few examples where i've been a fanboy in the past and made some bad decisions and how i changed my mindset to really make decisions now based on what is the best product for me to accomplish a task and not necessarily buy a product just because i like or hate a certain company in the end so the first example i want to give is one that actually happened when i was in high school and at that time i was a huge fan of microsoft i was really really a big fan boy of everything they were doing even though it wasn't very popular at the time and this brought that when they announced the surface rt product you probably don't remember it because it was a terrible tablet it really was not a good purchase decision and when they announced it i went away and bought it right away i bought it because i love microsoft i love the idea that you find behind the tablet but didn't really think it was a good purchase decision in the end or not actually after two years i ended up selling my tablet because it just wasn't good wasn't doing what i wanted it to do so it was really a bad purchase decision because at the time there were ipads and there were also android tablets that were much more popular at the time and both of these options would have been much better choices for me to do the tasks i wanted to do on the tablet the point of the windows tablet is that there were no apps at all to do anything so i could probably did some award documents or go on the web but that's pretty much all i could do on the tablet and buying a thousand dollar tablet to do only that was a really bad purchase decision and the only reason i got it in the first place was because i was a microsoft fanboy let's talk about something that's probably interests much more people on my channel and it's why i'm thinking of switching to sony instead of sticking with canon for my next camera so a lot of time you get the question of what is the best camera and i really don't like that question because over the years i realized that the most important question to ask yourself is not what is the best camera but what is the best cameras for your need and that last part is very important you need to define why your product is going to be great and why it's going to be great for you because there's a lot of tech products out there and they all have differences between all of them and the differences are going to determine what is good for one person and why it's not for somebody else so when i was looking for a new camera there's a few things i'm looking for so first of all i'm looking to get some 4k video i think because of most videos now on youtube are 4k i want to switch my workflow to that too i also need very good autofocus so sony didn't used to have a good photo focus but these days it's really really good and i would even say that other leaders in terms of video autofocus they also want good to have good low light performances again sony is really good with low light performances and i also want a camera that can take some really good photos and also take some good videos because i won't just be using it for videos i'm also going to be using it for photos so i still think that canon has a lead in terms of photo quality but now i'm looking for a camera that has more video focus features and for this i think that sony has much better offerings and even cheaper prices than what canon has to offer for comparable features so this is why i'm probably switching to sony because i think that for me and my needs for my youtube channel and making my videos a sony camera is going to be much better in the end it's a hard choice to make because i invested a lot of money inside of canon and i kind of wanted to stick with canon but in the end for me the best decision is actually going with sony or another brand that's gonna have better features for me for my needs so now let's talk about my macbook pro because this is another decision that i made as being a microsoft fanboy and it was actually another bad decision i did in the past so i bought the macbook pro about five years ago when i had my first internship everybody in my internship was using macbook pros and because it was an internship they were not giving me a computer so they said that if i wanted to be like everybody else and have the same workflow as them i was better to go and buy a macbook pro which i did i didn't have the biggest budget at the time so i bought the cheapest version of the macbook pro that it had in store which was honestly still pretty expensive for a computer but in my head it wasn't a big problem because at home i had a windows laptop that was pretty good and i didn't really like apple either so i didn't really want to invest in a good macbook pro but i also most instantly regretted my decision because a few months later my windows laptop screen broke so i stopped using that one as much and started using this one as my primary laptop and i quickly realized that buying the cheapest model in the macbook pro was a big problem because i only had eight gigabits of ram and 256 gigabit of storage on side of it so i really quickly maxed out the computer and had all kinds of performance problems i had it for the last five years and still have so many problems with it up to this day and buying a better model would have solved a lot of them so i still have more problems so i have the broken keyboard i have screen burnings i also have a speaker that's not working the power cord is broken and also the touch part has been pretty buggy these other problems could have happened to any computers but i think that if i invested on a better laptop at least i wouldn't have had all the problems with the storage that is missing or problems with uh video editing photo reading or whatever task that's a little bit more demanding and where this computer simply cannot handle them anymore and which forced me to buy a new macbook pro today now if you're wondering why i decided to stick with a macbook pro after having so many problems with this one in the last few years by the way this is a 2016 model it's not the one that i'm going to be receiving in about a month to month and a half is that it's the best computer out there at least for making videos if you haven't followed the whole market of laptops in the last few years apple came out with a new chips a new cpu and a new gpu last year the m1 chip that is way way way faster than other competition and it is very very good for video editing or high-end tasks like that one i actually decided to wait a full year because i knew that last year were the cheaper models and they would have their better more pro models coming out this year so i decided to wait a full year and i'm really happy to have waited because that chip that is already much better than pretty much everything you can get from intel right now it's getting four times faster so it's probably faster than what i need i probably don't need as much speed but i actually just want a computer i can edit videos really well because this one right now you might not know but one of the videos i published a few weeks ago took 10 hours to export so for me that's becoming a pretty big problem i did a failed video where i talked about why i decided to switch to final cut pro which is a program that apple makes for editing video instead of using premiere pro like i did in the past so i'm going to link that video if you're interested to learn why but this has been a huge time saver for me it's a much better program for me or for the videos i make and having this video that's gonna use the full potential of the macbook pro that i just bought is gonna be a huge advantage for me so not having to wait 10 hours for video to export or just being able to edit some 4k video is gonna be a huge thing oh i forgot to say i actually can't even edit some 4k videos using this laptop because it's just not powerful enough so i definitely needed to get a new computer to be able to upgrade and willful and also upgrade my camera if i wanted to start making some 4k videos it's also very interesting because apple seemed to have learned from their errors and they're actually bringing back some of the ports that i didn't have on the macbook so you you might know that macbooks are famous to only having some usbc ports and actually bringing back the sd card which is a huge thing for me they're also bringing back an hdmi port and the max safe port and also making the whole computer a little bit bigger which means you're gonna get better performance out of this so all of these things show that apple actually learned from the errors oh also they're getting rid of this horrible touch bar never liked it so i'm really happy they're getting rid of it but you see that apple actually learned and listened to the clients and what the pros actually want when making photos videos or these types of workflows so i'm really looking forward to get that laptop is it the best laptop that everybody should be getting out there no it's a crazy expensive laptop and for most people it makes no sense for me it does make sense because i do enough money on youtube right now to be able to afford it and pay it back in full in the next two years so that's not a huge problem for me of buying that laptop but if you're just starting out and making videos or things like that don't go out and buy a 40 000 4 dollar laptop it's not gonna be the right choice for you but if you have the budget and you know that's what you want to be doing and you know you're gonna be using 4k videos or ak videos then in this case this is a very good laptop for you or for these types of workflows does this mean that i'm switching all my devices to apple and becoming a fanboy no not at all because for most of their products they're not a right fit for me i still use for my job at windows laptop and really enjoy windows especially windows 11 and for android i'm definitely gonna prefer android over ios i did try using iphones a few times but just never really liked it i like being able to personalize my phone and get it to work uh in a certain way so i like having all my icons at the bottom having widgets on the home screen being able to have a work profile which is very useful right now on my phone when i'm working full time and all kinds of things like that that just make for me a better choice of having an android phone i also really like the cameras on the google pixel 4 and also live astrophotography mode so these are all things that make a google pixel device or other devices from android probably better choices for me and then buying an iphone if they definitely change and it fixes all of these problems i might want to change later on but for now it's not a device that interests me same thing for work devices using windows is great for me i have no problem with it at all and if intel qualcomm or these companies can come out with a better chip i'm definitely gonna be looking into switching back to windows for editing my videos but for now it just doesn't make total sense for me another thing i really don't like with apple and it doesn't change that i'm buying some of their products is actually their ecosystem lock-in and i know that the reason why using final cut pro is actually one of their plans is getting people to use it like that program then buying macbook pros or other of their pro computers to be in your videos but for me this actually still makes sense because i really need a program that allows me to make videos quickly in an efficient way and this is the best program for me do i like the fact that they're trying to lock me inside of a co-system no not at all but i work hard to keep all of my other apps as much as possible cross-platform so i can really easily switch from one platform to the other and if i decided one day to go back to windows it wouldn't be a huge drill for me because most of the other apps i'm using except for video editing are actually apps that are also going to work on windows so that's not a big problem for me i think that in the end and also working with a windows laptop in the day and also mac more at night or during the weekends actually keeps me into two ecosystems so it's not a problem at all for me i'm switching between one or the other so i think that the main takeaway of this video is simply not being a fanboy or a fan girl when you're going out to buy a new tech products it's totally fine to have companies that you prefer any companies that you don't like at much but when you're buying a product you should really look at the full diversity of products that are offered and try and find the best match for you it's also a whole other story if you decide not to buy products from a certain company because there's ethical dilemmas or there's really something serious inside of a company that you don't like so for example when i receive an amazon package i always feel kind of guilty because i didn't really like how they treat their workers or things like that but that's a whole other story that is very different it's not the same thing as not buying a product from a company simply because you're a fanboy or fangirl of another tech company and you think they should always just buy the products from that company this is only going to make you do bad purchase decisions so please please please next time when you buy a tech product take the time of doing your research and trying to find the best product out there for you if you enjoyed this video please let me know by hitting the like button below and also What is this video about?
I've been thinking about this for a while now: being a fanboy or fangirl for a particular tech brand usually leads to terrible purchase decisions. I'm living proof of that.
In this video, I walk through a few examples from my own life where brand loyalty got in the way of making smart choices. When I was younger, I was such a devoted Microsoft fan that I bought the Surface RT—a truly awful tablet that I regretted almost immediately. I spent a thousand dollars on something that couldn't run any useful apps, when an iPad or Android tablet would have been far better for what I actually needed to do.
The same thing happened with my 2016 MacBook Pro 13. I bought it because everyone at my internship was using one, not because it was the right choice for me. I went with the cheapest model and ended up with just 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. For the past five years, it's been a nightmare—maxed out, full of performance problems, a broken keyboard, screen burn-in, a busted speaker, and a sketchy power cord. If I'd actually thought about my needs upfront and invested in a better model, I could have avoided most of that pain.
Now I'm switching from Canon to Sony for my next camera. I've shot Canon for years and always liked their photo quality, but Sony simply offers better tools for what I'm doing now: 4K video, excellent autofocus, solid low-light performance, and great value. That was a hard decision because I've invested heavily in Canon gear, but the point is clear—the best camera is the one that fits your actual workflow, not the one made by the company you've decided to love.
And yes, I just ordered a MacBook Pro 16 with the M1 Max. Before you think I've become an Apple fanboy, here's why it makes sense for me: I need serious performance for video editing and 4K work. My current machine takes 10 hours to export a single video and can't even handle 4K editing. The new chip is genuinely faster than anything else on the market right now. Apple also fixed a lot of what made their laptops frustrating—they brought back the SD card slot, HDMI, and MagSafe, and they finally ditched that horrible Touch Bar.
But I'm not switching to all Apple products. I still use Windows laptops for work and prefer them. I use Android phones and love my Google Pixel. I work hard to keep my apps cross-platform so I can jump between systems without friction. The key difference is that I'm choosing each tool based on what solves my actual problem, not based on which company I've decided to pledge allegiance to.
The real takeaway: do your research, look at what's actually available, and pick the best fit for your needs. Brand loyalty feels good, but it's usually just expensive nostalgia.
