The Google Pixel 5a finally arrived, and I've had some hands-on time with it. It's a great phone released at what feels like a weird moment, so I wanted to share my thoughts on whether it's actually worth your money.
First, the display is a big update from the 4a—it's now a 90Hz refresh rate screen, which is very welcome. The phone feels noticeably smoother in everyday use. The build quality is solid, and it's still a relatively compact device, which I appreciate.
The camera setup includes the main sensor and an ultra-wide lens. The real strength here is the software and computational photography—Google's approach to processing really shines and consistently delivers great shots in various lighting conditions. If you care about camera quality at this price point, the Pixel 5a is genuinely competitive.
But here's the thing: the Pixel line-up is huge right now, and the 5a sits in an odd spot. The screen feels like a nice improvement, but some people might find it a gimmick compared to the core features. The software experience is what really ties everything together—it's intuitive, fast, and just works. That's the Pixel advantage.
One important note: availability varies significantly by region. If you're in the US, Canada, or certain other markets, great—you can grab one. But in many other countries, the 5a simply won't be available. That's a real limitation if you're outside those territories.
Pricing is reasonable for what you get, especially if you value camera performance and clean Android. But the timing of the release and the Pixel line's complexity make me hesitant to say it's an obvious buy for everyone. It depends entirely on where you live, what you prioritize, and where you're upgrading from.
