A few months ago, my sister came to visit me in Vancouver. We decided to do a road trip to Tofino, British Columbia, Canada to learn how to surf for the first time in our lives. Can we call this "surfing" or is it simply falling in the water? 🤨Watch until the end to make a decision! We also went kayaking, hiking and watched a beautiful sunset during the weekend. Oh, I almost forgot, I also had my first DJI Mavic Air drone crash...

A few months ago, my sister came to visit me in Vancouver, and we decided to do something we'd never done before: drive out to Tofino and learn how to surf. Fair warning—we spent most of our time falling in the water, so "surfing" might be a generous term for what we were doing. But the journey there was incredible.
Tofino in winter is stunning. The moment we arrived, the weather was perfect, and we decided to go kayaking right away. I was nervous about how cold it would be, but with our winter coats on, it was surprisingly manageable. The real challenge came later when my sister rinsed the lifejacket and accidentally left our phone inside—hello, rice bag recovery mission.
The next day, we planned to hike Long Comber Mountain, but it was closed, so we pivoted to the Big Trees boardwalk loop instead. It's a shorter hike, but the old-growth cedar and spruce trees are genuinely impressive. I brought my DJI Mavic Air along to get some drone footage of the landscape, especially the glacier in the distance. Unfortunately, I got a little too ambitious and crashed it into a tree while bringing it back. The drone survived just fine, but my confidence took a hit.
The real centerpiece of the trip was surfing. We had a lesson in the morning (which I couldn't film because I forgot the waterproof casing), and we liked it enough to rent boards and try again in the afternoon. At about 2°C, it sounds brutal, but the wetsuit does the job, and with the sun out, it actually felt almost pleasant. As for whether we were actually surfing or just falling repeatedly—I'll let you watch and judge for yourselves.
We also caught a beautiful sunset, stopped at a viewpoint where we could see Vancouver across the strait, and had one of those perfect weekend adventures where everything from the landscape to the mishaps felt exactly right.
